SUBJECT: A Resolution Honoring Duke University and The Kenan Institute for Ethics

The affiliated members and staff of the Center for Academic Integrity respectfully submit the following resolution honoring Duke University and the Kenan Institute for Ethics

WHEREAS, in January 1997, Duke University took the bold step of establishing the Kenan Ethics Program; And

WHEREAS, Duke University selected an extraordinary academic leader and pioneer, Dr. Elizabeth Kiss to lead the Kenan Ethics Program; And

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Kiss and Sally Cole, then Executive Director of the Center for Academic Integrity, had the vision and foresight to see the enormous potential for mutual benefit that would result from the Center for Academic Integrity and the Kenan Ethics Program joining together in their mutual quest to promote academic integrity; And

WHEREAS, in the summer of 1997, the Center for Academic Integrity moved from Stanford University to Duke University to form a partnership with the Kenan Ethics Program; And

WHEREAS, Duke University served as a gracious host for two Center for Acadmic Integrity National Conferences, in 1996 and 1999; And

WHEREAS, in October 1999, the Center for Academic Integrity issued its foundational document "The Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity," which was mailed to 4,000 college and university presidents and has had a profound impact on the agenda of promoting academic integrity. This ambitious project would not have been possible without the support of the Kenan Ethics Program and Duke University, including the full support, encouragement, promotion and the inspiring introductory statement from Duke President Nannerl O. Keohane; And

WHEREAS, in the summer of 2000, Duke University made the initiatives, programs and impactful successes of the Kenan Ethics Program a permanent part of the university by establishing the Duke Institute for Ethics and reaffirming Dr. Elizabeth Kiss as the Director; And

WHEREAS, upon the summer of 2000 retirement of Sally Cole as the first Executive Director of CAI, the Kenan Institute for Ethics and the Center for Academic Integrity worked in partnership to redefine the role of the Executive Director of CAI by formalizing the position's role with Kenan as a Program Administrator; And

WHEREAS, Dr. Daisy Waryold became CAI's second Executive Director and the Kenan Program Administrator, and received amazing support from Elizabeth Kiss and the Kenan staff, and from Duke University in increasing the visibility of CAI at Duke and extending the reach and the influence of CAI throughout the nation; And

WHEREAS, the Kenan Institute and CAI collaborated closely on receiving and administering a grant from the Templeton Foundation to research moral development, moral education, institutional culture and the relationship to academic integrity. They further established the Templeton Fellows Program from 2004 through 2006; And

WHEREAS, Duke University and the Kenan Institute for Ethics continued their exceptional work and collaboration with Mindy Dalgarn and with Tim Dodd, as they provided leadership to CAI and service to Kenan from 2004 until 2007; And

WHEREAS, Duke University and the Kenan Institute for Ethics provided support and assistance as the Center for Academic Integrity entered a period in which it would assess its leadership, its organizational structure and, ultimately, its organizational affiliation; And

WHEREAS, Duke University and the Kenan Institute for Ethics served as hosts and partners with the Center for Academic Integrity for ten years, from 1997 until 2007; And

WHEREAS, and most importantly, both the Center for Academic Integrity and the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University have been able to pursue the passion and the vision of promoting academic integrity further and more effectively because of the partnership and the collaboration together for the past ten years;

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Board of Directors, on behalf of the membership of the Center for Academic Integrity, hereby extends their warmest appreciation and deepest gratitude to the Kenan Institute for Ethics and to Duke University for this MAGNIFICENT JOURNEY that we have shared for the past ten years. Further, the Center for Academic Integrity applauds the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University for their extraordinary service to the state of North Carolina and to the nation in promoting ethics and academic integrity. It is our sincere desire that the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University continue their success of impacting future generations of students and professionals who will carry on the legacy of their first ten years.
