I'm looking for samples of honor pledges that are affirmative (positive) statements instead of negative; ie. "On my honor, I pledge that I have practiced academic integrity on this assignment and followed my instrutors guidelines for authorized assistance." instead of "I have not received or given any unauthorized assistance" etc.
Do you use or know of an example you can share? Thanks. |

Dear Elaine,
I actually don't know of any off the top of my head, but I will check around. It seems like a very smart idea. |

I have had my students, both for my first year enrichment classes and my writing class do the following:
I certify that the work I present here is my own work according the Academic Policy statement from ......( and I put in the institute's name. I have also used Honor Code instead of Academic Policy. I have seen additions to this one that adds - and the follow people have given me feed back on this paper and then the names are listed and signed. I know at the University of Gettsburg, and I think in one or two classes here at RIT, teachers have students write similar statements on their test papers. However, I will tell a sad anecdote that one of my students witnessed last year. The class was in a large lecture room and the students sat every other sit and had to write this sentence and my student saw the student next to her cheat. She wrote to the professor about the situation, but I never found out what happened. I have had a few students plagiarize papers even after signing this. I always make them sign it in pen, although a few now have signatures on their computer and think that is okay but not sure how I feel about that. Hope this helps a smidgen. |

Maybe we could use this space to start generating ideas for one?

Here's an idea:
On my honor, I pledge that I have practiced academic integrity on this assignment and only given or received assistance as authorized by the instructor. |

You could even say something like: I certify that this work is my own except where I have indicated that I am relying on sources or that the work is collaborative. |

I'm curious: Is this for an individual course/assignment only, or for the school?
